1. what does buggy actually mean?

The term "buggy" comes from the English language and means "crazy". A buggy is a small, open vehicle with a road licence, which means that it can also be driven on public roads in Mallorca.

Buggies are a bit like go-karts. The buggy was invented by an American, initially as a vehicle for the beach. The term "beach buggy" was born. However, it wasn't long before resourceful developers in the automotive industry turned the first beach buggy into the all-terrain speedsters that are so popular today.

2 Why is buggy hire and driving on Mallorca so much fun?

You sit like in a car, have the same possibilities, but a buggy is much more manoeuvrable and, above all, you can also explore Mallorca off-road with it. Let the wind blow around your nose and enjoy the ride on any type of terrain. No car walls block your view! Because when you hire a buggy, you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view as you drive through Mallorca's most beautiful landscapes.

3. monster buggy, beach buggy or compact speedster?

Depending on the terrain, driver type and intended use, there are countless variants of the popular off-road vehicles worldwide. Often built by inventors on their own initiative, these models are usually only used on their own property - e.g. a ranch - without a licence. In view of the fact that driving on beaches in Mallorca is no longer authorised, the rental of beach buggies has also been discontinued throughout the island.

In any case, the buggy hire companies we have selected leave nothing to be desired in terms of driving fun. Tried and tested two-seaters are available for each provider and excursion.

Those travelling with friends, in groups or with the family can still get on board. Because the tours start with up to six vehicles! Always included: adrenaline, a spicy pinch of adventure and petrol!

4. do I need a driving licence to drive a buggy on Mallorca?

As all-terrain vehicles with four wheels, buggies also require a valid type B or class 3 driving licence to drive them. The document must always be presented before the start of the trip. If it is forgotten, it will not be possible to start and unfortunately there can be no refund, as the buggy you have reserved is blocked for other bookings.

In addition to a driving licence, at least 1 year of driving experience is required in Spain, which must be proven to the buggy hire company. This results in a minimum age of 19 years for drivers on Mallorca.

Of course, buggy hire always includes a compact briefing. This is carried out by the experienced buggy hire staff before you start driving.

5. your buggy hire on Mallorca: on your own or as a guided tour?

Our carefully selected buggy hire partners promise excursions to real insider tips in breathtaking natural surroundings. Thanks to the local, highly experienced guides, you will get to see a lot that would not be possible in the time frame without their local knowledge.

Photo stops at any time during the tours offer plenty of opportunity to capture your individual impressions. Alternatively, you can get to know Mallorca the way you want to with self-organised buggy tours. Including a spontaneous stop for a coffee or to cool off in the sea.

No matter which buggy hire option you choose: A buggy tour will take you directly to your favourite attractions.

6 Dress correctly:So you are ideally prepared for your buggy adventure on Mallorca

Hiring and driving a buggy is fun. The buggy brings you into contact with the elements like no other means of transport. It goes without saying that this requires the right preparation. You are best prepared for your Mallorca tour in a buggy with clothing that can cope with light soiling.

Similar to driving a car, sturdy footwear is also essential for excursions in a buggy. With regard to the wind, it is also advisable to be aware of the difference in temperature, even on hot days. To be on the safe side, a scarf should not be missing, just like the sunglasses that are obligatory in Mallorca. Not only explorers of the mountain regions know that the weather often changes quickly on the island.

If in doubt, a raincoat should always be on board in addition to a jacket or jumper. In addition, enjoying the fresh air requires adequate sun protection! If it is very sunny, the small seats of the little speedsters can get quite hot. To be on the safe side, a cloth to cover the seat surface should not be missing.

7. cross-country or road? Where are buggy tours possible in Mallorca

Thanks to the fact that all vehicles are road-legal, the island offers a network of several hundred kilometres of possible routes for your dream memories! In addition, there are also a large number of unsurfaced paths to remote destinations waiting to be discovered. As a rule, it is possible for buggies to drive on them - unless otherwise marked.

But buggy tours are also ideal for lovers of hidden villages. This is because the compact size of the vehicles allows you to drive through even the narrowest alleyways to discover your favourite places! Unfortunately, it is no longer permitted to drive on beaches with beach buggies.

But even so, the wild east of Mallorca offers plenty of wild space for dusty adventures! In addition to the option of planning individual tours with experienced guides, five top routes in spectacular scenic areas and for off-road adventures can be booked via sunbonoo.

8. dry, hot or wet? What is the best buggy weather?

If you want to hire a buggy, you can do so all year round on Mallorca. The reason for this is the low probability of rainfall on the island throughout the year. And if it does rain, it often continues straight after the short showers.

This means that nothing stands in the way of you planning a safe excursion in a buggy. And if it should rain continuously on the day of the excursion, the excursion can perhaps be postponed in consultation with the hire company. If this is not possible, the tour you paid for in advance will of course be refunded.

Attention! Hiring a buggy on Mallorca without a guide is unfortunately not permitted by law.

9. fit 4 fun? What requirements you need to fulfil for buggy hire in Mallorca

The good news first: hiring a buggy is possible for practically anyone. Even a normal level of fitness allows you to take the wheel of one of the open-top speedsters. However, it is also clear that off-road driving is not recommended for pregnant women or drivers with back or joint problems.

Dust and draughts are also to be expected when driving on partly unpaved roads. The dimensions for steering the buggy require the rider to be at least 1.60 metres tall for a comfortable ride.

If the personal situation allows, people with limited mobility can of course also enjoy a tour in a buggy as a passenger.

Children from the age of around 4 years can of course come on board. If a small difference in height needs to be compensated for in order to buckle up safely, seat pads are available for the little ones.

10 What is the difference between a buggy and a quad bike?

You can think of a quad bike as a motorbike, but with four wheels. The rider sits upright and there is a handlebar that is used not only to steer, but also to accelerate and brake. Quads have no roof.

The buggy, on the other hand, is more like a car, has a high number of horsepower compared to its weight, is heavily sprung and is also designed like a car on the inside - namely with a steering wheel and pedals. Only without the usual bodywork. You sit flat and in direct contact with nature.

11. is buggy driving dangerous?

As always in general road traffic, the risk depends largely on the driver. In general, it is no more dangerous than riding a bike, motorbike or car if all instructions from the guide are followed and the buggy is driven carefully. Pilots can of course rely on safe technology: Because all buggy hire companies on Mallorca selected according to our quality criteria check and maintain their vehicles at regular, short intervals. Safety-relevant components are even checked daily!

12. who can hire a buggy?

Basically, you're never too old for a buggy tour adventure. With the right driving experience, anyone with a driving licence can take the wheel.

Would you like to surprise your children with an excursion in a buggy or add a very special memory to your holiday in Mallorca as a couple? Either way, this is a good idea.

Buggy hire is also worthwhile for groups, for example for stag parties or company outings. We have summarised what else you should consider when hiring a buggy on Mallorca in the section "Fit 4 Fun - requirements for excursions".
