Castell Bellver - the round castle of Palma

Innenhof von Castell Bellver in Palma

If you like to get an overview, you can't miss the Castell de Bellver in Palma. The name of this medieval castle complex is no exaggeration: nowhere else will you get such a "beautiful view" over the bay of Palma. Bellver rises to a height of 112 metres in the south-west of Palma.

What you can experience at Castell de Bellver

The Castell de Bellver is an architectural jewel - and not just because of its location. The completely circular construction is unique in Spain and creates a harmonious sense of space. From the castle roof, you can enjoy a 360° view over Palma, the Tramuntana mountains and the harbour. A visit in the evening is particularly atmospheric as the sun slowly sinks into the sea.

Turm Castell de Bellver Palma

On the ground floor is the Museum of the History of the City of Palma, which has been housed in the castle since 1936. It offers fascinating insights into the development of the city from Roman times to modern times. Bellver is also a stop on the red sightseeing bus and can be easily reached by car or on foot - it takes around 30 minutes from the harbour.

History and architecture of Bellver

The castle was built around 1300 by order of King Jaume II of Mallorca. Most of the material for this came from the underground caves directly beneath the complex - a clever move that simultaneously provided building materials and enabled a later escape and dungeon network.

The central round building is flanked by three towers and a free-standing donjon connected by a drawbridge. The complex served as a residence, defence base and state prison several times in its history. The royal court of Joan I of Aragón also spent time here. Today, Bellver is one of the most popular sights in the city of Palma.
