It's a steady climb on this jeep safari to the centre of Crete: we drive from Agios Nikolaos towards the Dikti Mountains, passing picturesque mountain villages and views, watching out for eagles and vultures. Until we reach the foot of Spathi Mountain, at 2,140 metres above sea level the second highest on the island. On the north side is the Psychro Cave, the birthplace of the greek god Zeus. From here you have a 15-minute, rather steep climb to the entrance of the cave. But it is worth it. The cave is beautifully illuminated and worth seeing (entrance fee is not included). After visiting the cave, head for a traditional Cretan meze lunch with local wine. Get to know the hospitality of the locals at this stop. Our Crete Jepp Safari then takes you around the plateau, including views of the north coast and a photo stop at the impressive Aposelemis Dam. Also on the route is the oldest plane tree on the island (2400 years old) and the men's monastery in Selinari. Your driver and professional guide will be happy to add more stops.

Detailed description

Jeep Safari from Agios Nikolaos to the Zeus Cave on Crete

Those who have mastered the 15-minute ascent to the entrance of the Zeus Cave are rewarded for their efforts with a wonderland of stalagmites and stalactites. The cave is the most famous on the island and, according to Greek mythology, the birthplace of the god Zeus was here. However, the visit is not only worthwhile because of the inner and traditional values, but above all because of the location: more than 1000 metres above sea level on the Lassithi Plateau in the middle of the Dikti Mountains. The way there on our jeep safari from Agios Nikolaos therefore leads steadily uphill and past incredible viewpoints again and again. Enjoy a Crete rich in facets and the comfort of our off-road jeeps on this full-day excursion in an off-road vehicle. This tour offers a number of stopping and photo points and the comfort of a Land Rover Discovery. You will be accompanied by a professional driver and guide in the vehicle (up to 6 people in total).

After pick-up in Agios Nikolaos as well as other resorts within a 30 kilometre radius, we start the Crete Jeep Safari towards the centre of the island and will pass some charming mountain villages and natural island landscapes on the way. We can stop for a coffee break in a taverna and experience the hospitality of the Greeks. The ascent in an off-road vehicle to the Zeus Cave is an experience on partly narrow winding roads. The circumnavigation of the Lassithi plateau makes this jeep tour on Crete a small adventure. The Psychro Cave is located on the north face of the Spathi Mountain, which is considered the second highest elevation on Crete. From the car park, you have to stretch a bit to climb the steps to the entrance of the cave. Once you have reached the top, a staircase leads you straight down again: into the cave. Archaeological finds prove that the Zeus Cave was a cultic place for thousands of years. Many of these finds (including pottery and bronze objects) are exhibited in the archaeological museum in Heraklion.

Part of a full day tour in Crete is also a traditional Cretan lunch, which is included in the price of the Agios Nikolaos Jeep Safari and takes us to a small taverna. Here we can let the impressions of the cave visit sink in over a glass of wine and look forward to the other points on the route. The circumnavigation of the Lassithi plateau is followed by a visit to Krasi - famous for probably the oldest plane tree not only on the island. 2400 years have grown the trunk circumference of the tree on the village square to more than 20 metres. The last stop on our Crete Jeep Safari is the Selinari Monastery. From there we drive back in the jeeps towards the sea and reach Agios Nikolaus in the evening.
