The limestone caves on the east coast of Mallorca are loved by everyone. The Dragon Caves offer visitors a unique miracle of nature. The colours and formations inside the cave are stunning and take you into a subterranean, surreal-looking world full of lakes and stalactites.

Booking option: Half-day Cuevas del Drach Tour with pick-up from South, East and North

On the half-day tour, you will be picked up from your accommodation on Mallorca, which is located in the south or east of the island or at a meeting point within walking distance, and driven to the dragon cave "Cuevas del Drach" together with other guests. The pick-up takes place between 08:00 and 09:00 in the morning. On the way, a tour guide will tell you interesting facts about the history of the cave and how it was formed. Once you arrive at the cave, you will take part in a guided tour of the cave in smaller groups. The tour ends at around 13:30. You will be taken to your accommodation.

The history of Mallorca´s famous Dragon Caves

  • The Cuevas del Drach were already known about in 1338, which is in the Middle Ages. The former governor of the island and at the same time mayor of Manacor immortalised himself with an inscription there
  • In 1632, the term "Drach" was first mentioned in a book by Dameto in his work "Historia del Reino de Mallorca", in English: "History of the Kingdom of Mallorca"
  • Geographically, the caves could be found first on a map of Mallorca made by Cardinal Despuig in 1784
  • In 1880, the caves were examined by the researcher and cartographer M.F. Will and sixteen years later, Edouard Martel explored the caves again, discovering further caves and also the subterranean lake, which have beared his name since then
  • Between 1922-1935, the caves were prepared for visitors and constantly renewed
  • The concert and the light show were introduced in 1935, designed by the Catalan engineer C. Buigas, which imitate a sunrise over the lake

The visit to the Drach caves: At the beginning of the approximately one-hour tour, when entering the caves, you can see the "flag", a special rock formation, whose curved pattern gives the impression of a flag blowing in the breeze. On the sightseeing tour through the caves, you will pass the "Baths of Diana", which look more like something you'd expect to see on a Caribbean beach than in a Mediterranean cave world Then it's off to the "Little Lake" with the "Monte Nevado" which means snow-capped mountain, a formation which looks a lot like a snow-covered mountain.

The ceilings of the caves are dotted with long stalactites, which are dripping stones that grow about one centimetre every 100 years. The absolute highlight of the visit is, however, hidden in the depths of the caves: a boat trip across Lake Martel, the largest underground lake in Europe. To round off the surreal experience, the boats are accompanied by a 10-minute live classical concert, enabling the visitors to enjoy the fascination of the underground world with the musical harmony of a cello, a pianoforte and two violins. But that´s not all! Special light effects imitate a beautiful sunrise over the lake.

The Drach Cave Tour ends with an unforgettable concert and light show. For those who are afraid of water, there is also the possibility to cross the lake over a bridge and enjoy the music as well as the lights from there. The unique combination of nature, music as well as visual effects make a visit to the Cuevas del Drach an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

fascinating dragon caves with a unique underground lake

the dragon caves in mallorca are awesome! the stalactites are absolutely impressive and the underground lake - simply wow. the boat tour with live concert was the highlight. the transfer was super organised, but a little more time would have been nice. all in all a great experience!

die drachenhöhlen in mallorca sind der hammer! die tropfsteine sind absolut beeindruckend und der unterirdische see – einfach wow. die bootstour mit live-konzert war das highlight. der transfer war super organisiert, aber etwas mehr zeit wäre schön gewesen. insgesamt ein tolles erlebnis!

awesome caves but a bit chilly inside

amazing experience exploring the dragon caves! the stalactites and boat trip were surreal. the concert added magic. bring a jacket though, it gets chilly inside!

dragon caves - an adventurous experience!

Wow, what an adventurous day in the Cuevas del Drach! My mate and I were there in spring and it was really amazing. The stalactites and stalagmites are simply impressive. The highlight was definitely the boat trip across the underground lake Martel, accompanied by a live concert. The music and lighting effects created an incredible atmosphere. Our guide was great, he told us exciting facts about the formation of the caves. The tour was well organised and the transfer went smoothly. The only downside was that it was a bit crowded, but hey, that speaks for its popularity! All in all, a must for every visitor to Mallorca. Pack your camera, you won't regret it! A really great experience that you won't forget in a hurry.

drachenhöhlen – ein abenteuerliches erlebnis!

Wow, was für ein abenteuerlicher Tag in den Cuevas del Drach! Mein Kumpel und ich waren im Frühling dort und es war echt der Hammer. Die Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten sind einfach beeindruckend. Der Höhepunkt war definitiv die Bootsfahrt über den unterirdischen See Martel, begleitet von einem Live-Konzert. Die Musik und die Lichteffekte haben eine unfassbare Atmosphäre geschaffen. Unser Guide war top, er hat spannende Infos zur Entstehung der Höhlen erzählt. Die Tour war gut organisiert, der Transfer hat problemlos geklappt. Einziger Nachteil: Es war etwas voll, aber hey, das spricht ja für die Beliebtheit! Alles in allem ein Muss für jeden Mallorca-Besucher. Packt eure Kamera ein, ihr werdet es nicht bereuen! Echt eine super Erfahrung, die man nicht so schnell vergisst.
