Did you know that Mallorca has more than 4,000 caves? Most of them are not accessible, but a few, such as the famous Cuevas del Drach in Porto Cristo, can be visited. These stalactite caves are among the natural wonders of the island and offer a unique experience between mystical atmosphere and geological fascination.
The Dragon Cave is more than just an impressive natural phenomenon - it is a place full of magic. During the summer months, one of the most extraordinary concerts in the world takes place here: Musicians glide across Lake Martel in boats and let classical melodies float through the cave. The acoustics between the rock formations and the artistic lighting create an unforgettable experience.
Lake Martel (Lago Martel) is the centrepiece of the Dragon Cave and is one of the largest underground lakes in Europe. It measures around 117 metres in length, is up to 30 metres wide in places and around 14 metres deep at its deepest point. The water is crystal clear and shimmers in fascinating shades of blue and green depending on the lighting.
The lake was discovered in 1896 by Édouard-Alfred Martel, one of the pioneers of modern cave exploration, and was later named after him. His discovery was instrumental in making the Cuevas del Drach an internationally recognised attraction.
The Cuevas del Drach - or Dragon ' s Cave - is not only one of the most famous caves in Mallorca, but also a testimony to thousands of years of geological history. It was not until the late 19th century that they were systematically explored and opened to the public in 1935. They owe their name to ancient legends that tell of a dragon that is said to have lived in the depths of the cave.
Geologically, Mallorca belongs to the limestone of the Andalusian Folded Mountains. Contrary to the assumption that Mallorca is of volcanic origin, the caves are the result of limestone erosion. Over millions of years, water and mineral deposits formed the breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites that amaze visitors today.
In addition to the Cuevas del Drach, there are many other interesting sights in the region. Nearby are the Cuevas de Hams, which are also known for their fascinating stalactite formations. The surrounding area also offers numerous hiking and nature trails.
A visit to the Cuevas de Hams is worthwhile if you want to discover even more underground wonders. For nature lovers, the nearby Mondragó Nature Park is another highlight.
