7 fascinating diving spots on Mallorca

Mallorca is a diverse island that offers numerous activities on land as well as an impressively beautiful underwater world. Mallorca has a large number of nature reserves where a fascinating underwater flora and fauna has developed.

At the right diving spots on Mallorca you will find huge schools of fish and unique diving conditions, where you can also discover endangered species. A large number of diving centres can be found in the southwest and east of the island in particular, as the diving conditions there are ideal and there are many different diving spots nearby. The diving spots are often reached by car or boat. However, there are also some opportunities for beautiful shore dives, where the diving spots are approached from the shore (e.g. Cala Sa Nau in the east of the island). Diving in Mallorca is possible all year round and is recommended for beginners and professionals. Very good diving conditions and visibility can often be found even in the low and off-season. Mallorca's diving spots are very diverse, you can dive to reefs, grottos, caves or a variety of wrecks. Cabrera

Cabrera

The island of Cabrera is located south of Mallorca and has been a nature reserve since 1991. This is why Cabrera is by far one of the most beautiful diving spots in Mallorca: the strict regulation of visitor flows has created an isolated, very diverse underwater life. As only two diving boats are allowed to visit the island each day, it is advisable to book your dive well in advance. In return, you can expect an enormous variety of species and a diverse and excellently preserved seabed with underwater cliffs that drop off steeply by up to 90 metres. You can look forward to schools of barracuda, seahorses, red starfish, dolphins, sea turtles and corals, which you can observe wonderfully with excellent visibility of up to 50 metres. Cabrera is also home to the Cova Azul cave, which is known for its bright blue water and schools of fish and is one of the most beautiful cave diving spots in Mallorca.

Illa del Toro

One of Mallorca's best-known marine reserves is the El Toro diving spot near Santa Ponsa on the south-west coast of the island. Ideal diving conditions make El Toro the perfect diving spot for beginners and advanced divers. Here, too, a great variety of species awaits your visit - discover moray eels and scorpion fish as well as golden perch, jackfish, red dragonfish and peacock fish. With a bit of luck, you may also find beautifully patterned seahorses. A steep drop-off of more than 40 metres full of holes, small caves and grottos offers ideal hiding places for octopus and conger eels. Let the many schools of fish accompany you on your dive and enjoy the good visibility out to sea!

Pirate cave

Pirate's Cave

In the east of the island, near the famous Cala Varques, you will find the so-called Pirate's Cave, a diving spot in Mallorca that can only be reached from the sea. The Pirate's Cave is quite large and fascinates with various tunnels, underground lakes and chambers as well as beautiful stalactite formations. The diving spot is also very suitable for beginners and snorkellers. The water is crystal clear and offers ideal diving conditions. The cave has a constant temperature of around 18 degrees, so a wetsuit and a good head torch are a must. You can climb and swim a lot through the cave and gradually discover the cave system with its various chambers. A dive here is particularly worthwhile with a local guide who knows the Pirate Cave and can provide interesting information about the cave during the dive.

Malgrats Islands

Malgrats Islands

The Malgrats Islands diving spot near Santa Ponsa in the south-west of the island has been a nature reserve since 2004. Due to the strict restrictions, the underwater flora and fauna has improved significantly and a wonderfully diverse underwater world can now be discovered at this diving spot. In 2007, a 133-metre-long ship was sunk around 400 metres off the Malgrats Islands, where numerous animal and plant species have now found shelter. The Malgrats Islands are one of the most visited diving spots on the south-west coast of Mallorca. The Malgrats Islands are also popular with divers because of their proximity to the coast (approx. 5 minutes by boat). The variety of species ranges from red coral reefs, sponges and sea grass to octopuses (which hide in tiny holes and close the entrances with a stone), moray eels, giant bream and pinnipeds.

Isla del Sec

In the south-west of the island, off Sol de Mallorca, you will find a really beautiful diving spot. There are large schools of barracuda and other fish to be discovered on the plateau, which slopes down to a depth of 32 metres. The special thing about the Isla del Sec are the three shipwrecks that were sunk several years ago. As a submarine was anchored there for tourists a few years ago, the idea was to offer them something special. Divers often fed the fish as part of a show, which is why the fish still accompany the divers at this diving spot in Mallorca today, hoping for treats. The shipwrecks are also home to moray eels and eels, which can hide very well there.

The wrecks off Palma

The Bahia de Palma is a very interesting diving spot for experienced wreck divers, as there are 4 shipwrecks off the coast near the harbour at depths of up to 35 metres. The largest wreck, which is 60 metres long, is very easy to dive into - this fascinating experience is sure to stay with you for a long time! Many schools of fish have also made a cosy home in the wrecks. Visibility under water is often poor and there is ship traffic due to the proximity to the harbour, which is why this fascinating diving spot in Mallorca is only suitable for experienced divers.

Dragonera Island

Dragonera Island

The island of Dragonera in the south-west of Mallorca has also been a nature reserve since 1995. Due to the excellent water quality and many years of protection, it is one of the most beautiful diving spots in Mallorca. Dragonera is particularly famous for its unique caves with trapped air bubbles, such as the stalactite cave La Cueva. Discover large amphipods and bear crabs on the steep walls up to 50 metres deep underwater and dive to the panoramic reef. At the edge of the drop-off you will discover a fascinating fauna with corals, sponges, hair stars and cylinder roses. If you are lucky, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the open sea at this diving spot in Mallorca and perhaps even spot an eagle ray or two. Experienced divers can also dive to the shipwreck off Dragonera, which lies at a depth of around 34 metres and is populated by giant moray eels and conger eels.

This is just a small selection of the diving spots that Mallorca has to offer. It is important to know that a copy of your passport, diving licence and diving insurance are required for every dive in Mallorca. This is not necessary for snorkelling at these diving spots. To be on the safe side, a dive should not be carried out 24 hours before or after a flight, otherwise there is a risk of decompression sickness.
