Diving for beginners: tips for the OWD diving course
If you want to learn to dive, your first step will be to complete the Open Water Diver diving licence (OWD diving course). If you have never dived before, you will probably be excited or nervous about your first dive and your first exercises. But don't worry: we have collected five useful tips for beginners to help you prepare for your diving course - so you can start your OWD diving course in Mallorca well prepared!
Diving beginner tips 1: Good ABC equipment is half the battle.
ABC equipment is the typical snorkelling equipment: Diving goggles, snorkel and fins. We can report from experience that a well-fitting diving mask makes a considerable difference to how comfortable you feel in the water. That's why you should get a suitable diving mask that fits the shape of your face perfectly before the OWD diving course. There is nothing more relaxing when diving than knowing that your basic equipment always works reliably and is so comfortable that you hardly notice it. The snorkel is also used when diving, for example to swim from the boat to the dive site or back, and basic snorkelling techniques are an integral part of the OWD diving course. Make sure that the snorkel is as flexible as possible and has a suitable, not too large mouthpiece that fits comfortably in the mouth and does not squeeze or let water in. Cost of ABC equipment: Good diving goggles are available from around €30-40, suitable fins from around €20-30 and a snorkel for around €10-20.
Diving beginner tips 2: The magic remedy for good visibility.
Almost everyone knows the problem: after a few minutes of snorkelling or diving, your diving mask suddenly fogs up and you can hardly see anything. If the lenses of your diving goggles mist up, a simple remedy can help: you can buy small bottles of a special anti-fogging liquid for diving goggles for around €4-5 in any diving shop and in many sports shops. A small dab on the dry inner lenses, rub vigorously, rinse briefly in water and put on your mask, and you can dive with the best visibility. This is one of the really practical tips for diving beginners that will solve a very annoying problem for you without much effort - because once you have dived, it would be a shame if you could hardly see the fish.
Diving beginner tips 3: Biodramina C tablets for boat dives.
During your OWD diving course in Mallorca, you will also have your first boat dive. This means that you will first travel by boat from the coast to the dive site. If you are prone to nausea caused by the swell, you should take a pack of Biodramina C tablets with you to be on the safe side. The tablets are inexpensive and can be easily obtained from the pharmacy. They work best if taken one hour before departure. This way you can avoid nausea on the way to the dive site and can look forward to the upcoming dive in the sea.
Diving beginner tips 4: No OWD diving course without a diving certificate.
To start an OWD diving course, you should complete a diving fitness test for your own safety - and also because it is required by every good diving school. It is best to visit a diving doctor before the OWD diving course, who will examine you for your fitness to dive and check whether you are medically fit to dive. If you already have a medical diving certificate, you can start the OWD diving course in Mallorca without any problems.
Diving beginner tips 5: Take a deep breath and relax.
You don't need to be afraid of the OWD diving course. Look forward to the unique experience that awaits you and consciously relax, especially before every diving exercise and every dive. Concentrate on breathing calmly. Relaxation helps enormously in completing the exercises without any problems and avoids unnecessary panic. Trust your diving instructor and have them show you the exercises several times if necessary. The more relaxed you are during the OWD diving course, the less air you will use. Deep, calm breaths (approx. 4 seconds) followed by a slow exhalation will calm you down within a few seconds. Pressure equalisation is also much easier when you are relaxed. And finally, diving is all about one thing: having fun!
