We answer the most frequently asked questions about children's diving courses in Mallorca.
From what age can children learn to dive?
Taster diving for children in Mallorca - a first dive supervised by an experienced diving instructor - is possible from around 8 years of age. The instructor will first explain to the children what they need to watch out for in the sea before they put on their diving equipment for the first time. After a few exercises in the pool or shallow water, they then go into the sea to a depth of up to 6 metres. For the first taster dive, the diving instructors choose very calm waters where there is plenty to see even at shallow depths. This allows children to gain their first experience of diving and try out whether they would like to learn to dive in Mallorca.
The internationally standardised Open Water Diver diving course in Mallorca (the basic diving licence) can be completed by children from the age of 10. It only takes about 3-5 half days, whereby the duration is always customised. For example, if your child wants to learn to dive all day on a holiday, the duration will be shorter; if there is no time for diving lessons one day due to another planned excursion, the duration will be longer. The diving course for children in Mallorca should always be fun and fit into your holiday schedule.
What is the difference between the diving course for children and the normal diving course?
The theory and practical content of the children's diving course on Mallorca is the same as the diving course for adults, only it is taught in a child-friendly way. This means that while adults deal with the important topic of "pressure under water" in great detail and backed up with figures, children first learn how pressure under water affects the body using the simple example of a balloon.
As the diving courses are only ever held in small groups and learning to dive is a hobby, the teaching is accordingly friendly and relaxed. It's all about discovering the fun of the sea - so children can learn to dive and at the same time find a new hobby that they can pursue for the rest of their lives all over the world with an internationally valid diving licence.
Is it easier for children to learn to dive than adults?
In fact, children usually find it much easier to learn to dive than adults - not least because they simply don't think as much and often behave correctly intuitively. This ranges from the basic exercises, such as snorkelling with only swimming goggles (without covering their nose), to the final exercises of the diving course, such as removing the goggles underwater, then putting them back on, blowing them out and diving on.
While adults often try frantically to suppress their reflexes and need a few attempts to get it right, children don't think about it at all and usually get it right on the first try. The earlier children learn to dive, the easier it is for them later to automatically perform the behaviour they have learned correctly underwater - the best conditions for safe diving with lots of fun.
