Gran Canaria's underwater world is surprisingly diverse and rich in different species - and the island is a worthwhile destination for first-time divers all year round. You will even see beautiful shoals of fish near the coast and have a great introduction to this water sport in the company of professional guides. The dive site off Anfi Beach is perfect for beginners. You can also expect a competent and multilingual team and very well-maintained equipment at the dive centre. The safety of the participants has the highest priority. One instructor will be looking after no more than two students.

Option 1: Dive for beginners from the beach

When you arrive at the diving centre, you will be given a full briefing by your instructor. They will explain how the diving equipment works and what you need to do during your first dive on Gran Canaria (and what not to do). They will tell you how to equalise the pressure in your ears, how to breathe underwater, how to clean your mask and how to communicate underwater. Your instructor will take you to the beach as soon as you’ve put on your wetsuit. There you will start by practising breathing through the regulator on the surface of the water. You will put on your fins and your mask as soon as you are familiar with this. Then take it slowly as you dive deeper into the water - up to a maximum of 6 metres. The instructor will hold you by the tank and/or by your hand the whole time. During the introductory dive you will be underwater for about 20 minutes and will see plenty of fish at Anfi Beach.

Option 2: Dive for beginners off a boat

There will be a detailed briefing at the diving centre before you take the boat to your first open water dive. The briefing includes everything you need to know for your first dive on Gran Canaria: how the diving equipment works, how you equalise the pressure in your ears, how you breathe and communicate with your guide underwater. The trip to the dive site takes between 5 and 10 minutes. Once you arrive, the boat crew will help you put on your fins and mask and will then help you into the water. In the water, you start by practising breathing through a regulator while you are still on the surface. Once you are familiar with breathing, you are ready for your first dive. The instructor will then take you slowly down to a depth of no more than 8 meters and will not leave your side during the dive. You will spend 20 minutes underwater.

Gran Canaria: Diving for beginners at Anfi Beach in the south of the island

Join experienced instructors on your first expedition underwater and discover a fascinating new world of silence and colours. When it comes to diving for beginners, Gran Canaria is the right island. The south in particular offers numerous diving sites for novices at water sports. You start your first excursion into the open water at the stylish tropical beach of Anfi del Mar and will learn the basics of diving from professional guides. The dynamic and varied underwater world of the Atlantic Ocean off Gran Canaria is one of the best diving experiences. Dense schools of fish, interesting flora, plus reefs, caves and inhabited crevices and the odd shipwreck. You will enjoy the dive site in Arguineguin.

You have a choice of 2 options for your first dive on Gran Canaria: a 1.5-hour introductory dive from Anfi del Mar beach or a 2-hour diving excursion from a rubber dinghy. You get about 20 minutes underwater with both options. In addition, you will be given a detailed briefing on diving and how to handle the equipment. You will learn how to put everything on and how to use it correctly, how to communicate underwater and what to remember when you’re on a dive. Safety is always an absolute priority in diving, which is why each instructor only looks after two students at the Anfi Beach diving centre. The guide will also always be right next to you during your first open water dive.

From the beach you will dive to a maximum depth of 6 metres and off the boat you will go down to a depth of no more than 8 metres. A 7.5 metre long dinghy that has space for 14 people is available for the boat trips. Thanks to the rich currents in the sea and the favourable conditions created by the temperatures of the Gulf Stream, Gran Canaria also ticks all the boxes in coastal areas with great visibility at depth and a wealth of species that are worth seeing. And the island is a diving spot all year round. The temperature of the sea is 18 degrees even in the winter. The profile of the volcanic island is also reflected in numerous underwater rock formations.
