Diving on holiday in Mallorca - what do I need to bring?

Depending on whether you want to learn to dive on holiday in Mallorca or whether you are already a certified diver with your own equipment, your packing list will certainly vary slightly. As an absolute beginner, you can either bring your own ABC equipment (diving mask, snorkel, fins) or, if you don't already have any, you can buy it here on site.

Most diving schools also have a small shop where they sell high-quality diving equipment at very favourable prices. This means you can get advice from your diving instructor on site and only have to plan some space in your suitcase for the basic equipment on the return flight. The rest of the diving equipment (wetsuit, booties, BC jacket, tank, regulator, pressure gauge, dive computer, weights) will be provided by the diving school when you complete your diving course on holiday.

If you would like to learn to dive on holiday, you should visit a diving doctor beforehand to have your diving fitness confirmed by a diving certificate - the diving certificate is required for the diving course. As a certified diver, you have the option of bringing any equipment you already have with you (this costs approx. €35 per flight as special baggage) or hiring all of it on site.

Where can I dive in Mallorca?

Mallorca has five coastal areas where you can dive on holiday: The north coast, the east coast, the south coast, the south-west coast and the west coast. Especially on the east and south-west coasts, which are also well developed in terms of infrastructure, German-speaking diving schools are a dime a dozen, taking you to wonderful diving spots off the coast of the Mediterranean island. Some of the highlights for diving on holiday are right on the coast, for example the Illa del Toro marine reserve, which is considered by many to be the island's top spot. Large shoals of barracudas regularly appear there, joining the numerous dolphinfish, jacks, groupers and goat bream.

The gently sloping coast is full of boulders, on and under which starfish, octopus, moray eels and the odd seahorse can be found. Other beautiful diving areas include the Illa del Sec, the wrecks off Palma, the Malgrats Islands and the island of Dragonera off Sant Elm (both on the south-west coast), which are located in other marine protected areas. The island archipelago of Cabrera lies just off the coast of Mallorca and, thanks to its strict nature conservation regulations, can offer a wide variety of species and great visibility.

There are also numerous diving spots on the north, east and west coasts where you will be amazed when diving on holiday. There are submersible cave systems where you can gain your first experience of cave diving, as well as some curiosities, such as underwater smugglers' tunnels, steep underwater walls up to 50 metres deep full of life, sunken submarines, arched tunnels to dive through, dripstone caves that can be dived into and much more. Most diving schools in Mallorca are located on the east and south-west coast.

When diving on holiday in Mallorca, not only can you expect a wide variety of small to large fish species, starfish, corals, mackerel and colourful nudibranchs, but with a bit of luck you may also spot rare sea creatures such as dolphins, turtles, moonfish or even cat sharks.

Diving on holiday in Mallorca - when is the best time?

Diving courses in Mallorca are usually extremely popular in July and August, as the largest number of holidaymakers visit the Mediterranean island during these months. It is best to book in advance for these months or choose the earlier or later months. From March / April, the sea water, which has become somewhat cooler over the winter, becomes warm again and the temperature rises to 24-25°C in some places by October. The months of September and October are ideal for diving on holiday, even though there may be more jellyfish during these months.

A diving course lasts approx. 3-5 days, depending on your personal time budget per day. Guided dives for certified divers are organised daily by the diving schools in Mallorca from April to October. Mallorca: A small paradise very close to the Mediterranean, perfect for diving on holiday.
