Gran Canaria beaches

Gran Canaria Strände
It may seem unusual at first glance, but the black volcanic sand that lines some of Gran Canaria's beaches is also great for sunbathing.

Playa de las Canteras

Gran Canaria Playa las Canteras
One of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe: Las Canteras in Las Palmas.

There is not much more to say about the city beach of Las Palmas, just enjoy: almost 3 kilometres of golden sand, the Blue Flag for good water quality flies in front, thanks to the breakwater the sea is calm and perfect for snorkelling, in between sun loungers, showers, sanitary facilities, everything barrier-free and behind it a promenade full of life. No wonder the locals consider this city beach almost a living room. In summer, it's easy to lose track of things here because it's so busy and possibly all the sunbeds are occupied. But even that can't hide the advantages: a beach in the centre of the city. That's quality of life too!

Playa del Confital

Gran Canaria Playa Confital
Pico de las Nieves - the peak of Gran Canaria.

A little further north of Playa Canteras is another natural spectacle in Las Palmas. Playa del Confital is the wild counterpart to Canteras, located at the northern tip of the island on the Las Isletta peninsula. Playa Confital is largely unspoilt and has no infrastructure, with the exception of toilets that are open seasonally. At this beach, the landscape and the tranquillity, which is relaxing compared to the water in the capital, are a delight. You can either lie on the sand or on one of the small stone rocks. Caution: When the waves are strong, the sea is only interesting for surfers.

Playa de Salinetas

Gran Canaria Playa de Salinetas
Playa de Salinetas in the municipality of Telde.

Playa de Salinetas is a beautiful beach in the municipality of Telde, on the east coast of the island. This is where crystal-clear water and fine black sand meet - a combination that is popular with locals and tourists alike. With a length of around 320 metres and a width of 20 metres, the beach is relatively small compared to other beaches on the island. Nevertheless, it is a great place for sunbathing, swimming and other water activities. One of the special features of Playa de Salinetas are the natural pools formed by the volcanic rock around the beach. These pools are ideal for children and less experienced swimmers as they offer a safe and calm swimming area. The beach is well equipped and has showers, toilets and sun loungers. There are several restaurants and bars nearby.

Playa Amadores

Gran Canaria Playa Amadores
Pico de las Nieves - the peak of Gran Canaria.

Playa Amadores is a picturesque beach on the south-west coast, around 20 minutes from Puerto Rico. The beach is known for its soft, golden sand, its clear blue water and its breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The approximately 800 metre long beach is framed by cliffs that form a beautiful and dramatic backdrop. There are several restaurants, bars and shops in the surrounding area that invite you to linger.

Anfi del Mar

Gran Canaria Anfi del Mar
Pico de las Nieves - the peak of Gran Canaria.

One of the best family beaches on the island with white sand, palm trees and Caribbean flair. The beach was artificially created in the 1990s and it is no coincidence that it is reminiscent of the Bahamas. The white Caribbean sand (10,000 tonnes) for the construction project came from there. The beach is home to a holiday resort of the same name with upmarket clus and hotels. The coastal area of Anfi del Mar is protected from the otherwise somewhat rougher winds of the Atlantic, which is why calm swimming and snorkelling are possible here. Everything is available on this beach, from lifeguards to sanitary facilities and sunbeds. There is also a wide range of water sports on offer.

Playa de Montaña Arena

Gran Canaria Playa Montana Arena
Sunset at the beautiful Playa Montana Arena.

A good 15-minute walk from the GC-500 coastal road, Playa Montaña Arena is located on the south coast, a completely unspoilt beach with very fine sand, crystal-clear water, nudism and space for dogs. The beach is not suitable for small children, there is no infrastructure, no toilets or showers and no snack vendors. However, outside the high season there is total seclusion and relaxation.

Playa de la Aldea

Gran Canaria Playa la Aldea
Pico de las Nieves - the peak of Gran Canaria.

A good example of a beach that you may not have been looking for, but found by chance while travelling across the island, and this makes you all the happier when you treat yourself to a refreshing dip in the wonderful waters of the west coast surrounded by locals. You can then relax on one of the wooden platforms that keep the small pebbles at bay and prevent pressure sores. If you continue exploring, you will also find black volcanic sand somewhere along this 300 metre long, very clean stretch.
