Booking option: Day trip to Gran Canaria with visits to historical sites

Get to know the most historic corners of Gran Canaria on this full-day tour with pick-up in the south. On our journey through the breathtaking landscape of the island, we will focus on the culture of the Canarian natives and the natural heritage. We start our tour with the Arinaga salt flats, which are located in the municipality of Agüimes. These salt pans date back to the 19th century and are a fascinating example of the ancient technique of salt extraction. A walk between the salt pans will give you an insight into the importance of this resource for both the economy and the local ecosystem.

Travelling towards the north coast of the island, you will be able to admire the mighty mountains, dramatic cliffs and magnificent panoramas - we will stop at one of these viewpoints for a photo and a view of the Atlantic Ocean. We then drive to the Cenobio de Valerón, an ancient granary carved out of the volcanic rock by the Canarian aborigines. This impressive archaeological site is one of the most fascinating examples of pre-Hispanic engineering. It is believed that thousands of tonnes of grain were once stored here, serving as a communal storehouse.

The journey continues to the Cueva Pintada in Gáldar, a veritable archaeological treasure trove of pre-Hispanic rock art. This museum and archaeological park are fundamental to understanding the culture of the ancient Canary Islanders, who left their vision of the world on the walls of this cave. It is also one of the most important examples of the conservation of cultural heritage in the Canary Islands.

Detailed description

Historical sites on Gran Canaria: day trip to the north coast

This historically orientated day trip on Gran Canaria takes us from the south to the far north. There we marvel at the aboriginal cave paintings in Gáldar and the old granaries of Valeron with spectacular views. On the approximately 8-hour round trip, we leaf through the island's history book and learn about the way of life of the Guanches, who defied adversity with astonishing skill and improvisation. At the same time, we will be accompanied by some panoramic views on this northern tour. A photo stop on the coast is therefore an integral part of the tour. You can also look forward to a lunch stop in Agaete, a picturesque coastal village with fresh cuisine.

Our tour begins with the salt pans of Arinaga, which are a work of art created by nature, the sea and man. Where salt was once extracted to preserve fish and other foodstuffs, a landscape of special beauty has been formed over the centuries. The Valeron caves are another example of how the island's indigenous people utilise the natural environment to preserve food. A huge granary consisting of around 350 caves dug into the volcanic rock. Entry to this impressive site is included and a guided tour is available in German and English. And finally, we reach Gáldar, one of the most important archaeological sites, which familiarises us with the art of the Guanches, but also with the history of the settlement.
