Detailed description

Barcelona Guided City Tour: Gothic Quarter and Picasso Museum

El rovell de l'ou – "the yellow of the egg" This is how the inhabitants of Barcelona call the historical city centre. The Gothic Quarter with its tiny streets and hidden places is pouring a unique charme and atmosphere. On the old walls, the medieval palaces and the enchanting patios, you'll be able to discover many evidences of events. Join this walk through Barcelona's history and feel the magical flair of the streets of the Gothic Quarter.

The centerpiece of the Gothic Quarter is its cathedral. The construction of the Gothic nave bay was already started in the 13th century. Its facade with the sweeping main portal could only be finished in 1890. Inside of the church you can see that it wasn't only constructed for liturgic-, but also for secular purposes. You see it in its choir, used once as a meeting point for the government, which is located directly in the middle of the main aisle. Official festivities, public festivals and conventions has always been held on the Plaça Sant Jaume. At this place, which already was located on two main roads during the Roman time, the republic state was proclaimed in 1931.

The seat of the Count of Barcelona and the Kings of Aragon was the Plaça del Rei, the place of the kings. It once was used as a marketplace, but then redesigned in the 14th century in order to enable tournaments there. In a complex of five Gothic palaces, you'll encounter the Picasso museum. Its collection holds around 4,200 artworks, amongst them numerous works from the younger years and the blue phase of the Spanish artist. Get a guided tour through the exhibition and enjoy this highlight of your city tour through Barcelona's Gothic Quarter.
