Let's start our Lobos adventure at the port of Corralejo, where we board an inflatable boat and after a short crossing we reach the jetty of Caleta de la Rasca - also the starting point of our walking route around Lobos. Only 300 meters from the starting point, we come across the first site of great historical importance, a Roman excavation site (currently covered), from where we continue our walk to reach the highest point of the island, La Caldera (124 m). After enjoying the view from the Caldera, we head north to admire the Martiño lighthouse and the view of the neighboring island of Lanzarote. After a short break, we continue south to Puertito. We can enjoy our sandwich at the beach and take a short swim stop. After we have bathed and strengthened ourselves, we take the boat back to the port of Corralejo and to a short photo stop in the dunes.

Detailed description

Mountain ascent on Lobos - Hiking in the most beautiful natural park of the Canary Islands

If you are looking for a hiking destination for your Fuerteventura vacation, Lobos is just the right island. Situated between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, this uninhabited island is a sight you can easily explore on foot. Lobos is one big nature park. There are no roads and no cars on los Lobos - so with hiking boots you are well equipped for this island exploration. The crossing by boat from the harbor in Corralejo in Fuerteventura gets you directly to the Lobos jetty. From there, you will start your tour in a northwesterly direction.

One goal of the Lobos hike is the highest point of the island: Montana de la Caldera. You don't have to climb too many meters in order to enjoy a panorama from up there that is second to none: Lanzarote on one side, Fuerteventura's peak on the other and at your feet the small natural paradise. For this 3-island view alone, the climb up the 124-meter high ancient volcano is worth it. After reaching the summit, we head northeast to the Martiño Lighthouse, built in 1865 and birthplace of the poet Josefina Pla. After admiring this beautiful lighthouse and its magnificent view of the neighboring island of Lanzarote, we head south to Puertito, where we have the opportunity to have lunch in the only restaurant on the island (depending on opening), enjoy our sandwich and swim at the beach of La Calera (La Concha) or in El Puertito (at your own risk). From there we go back to the pier and take the boat back to Fuerteventura.

The trails on Lobos are wide and well maintained. They are accompanied in places by the sea and the view of the coast. But above all you have the cone of the old volcano in front of your eyes. If you wish, you will receive walking sticks for the tour. In between, there is time to discover new things along the way, to look at animals and plants and to identify them with the help of your experienced guide. Lobos means seal island. And that is exactly what it was in former times. The name goes back to the monk seals that used to live there. Numerous animals and plants have adapted perfectly to the conditions on Lobos. Some are found only on Lobos. Especially the bird life offers an enormous variety of species. Lobos has been under nature protection since 1982, so that the biodiversity is preserved and promoted.
