Mallorca Wanderurlaub

The Mediterranean Balearic island of Mallorca is ideal for a walking holiday. Whether you only want to do a few hikes on holiday or want to hike your entire holiday, we will give you helpful tips on the right area and what you can expect on a hiking holiday in Mallorca. First of all, it is important to take a closer look at the island, as there is very different terrain and therefore a variety of options for a Mallorca walking holiday.

There are hikes along the coast, hikes to viewpoints and circular hikes, but also challenging to alpine hikes for experienced hikers. If you want to see more, you can also take part in guided cave hikes to discover the more than three thousand caves on Mallorca. Of course, there are also numerous options for hiking with children on the island. Depending on the region on the island, you can choose from the following hiking options.

Walking holiday Mallorca: Southwest coast (Port d'Andratx to Cala Mayor)

A walking holiday on Mallorca on the southwest coast is ideal for anyone who loves variety. Thanks to the excellent transport connections in the southwest (motorway), you can reach the capital in a short time, but you can also quickly reach the mountains. The Serra de Tramuntana begins just behind Calvia, and the famous GR 221 long-distance hiking trail, which runs through the entire Serra de Tramuntana, starts in Port d'Andratx. The southernmost thousand metre peak Puig de Galatzó at 1027 m and the classic hiking route La Trapa with views of the island of Dragonera are easily accessible from here. If you want to hike further north in the Tramuntana, you have to reckon with a journey of around 1 hour or more from the south-west. There are also many guided hikes from the south-west coast, which also include the transfer to the more distant starting point of the hike.

Hiking holiday Mallorca: South coast (Palma to Colonia de Sant Jordi)

On the very flat south coast, coastal hikes are particularly suitable for a hiking holiday on Mallorca, and the transport connections to Palma and the rest of the island are very good. However, apart from the monastery mountain Puig de Randa, which is ideal for hiking, there are hardly any hills in the south. From Palma, however, thanks to the motorway, you can reach the rest of the Serra de Tramuntana, Valldemossa, Banyalbufar, Esporles, Bunyola and Sóller, where you can hike parts of the famous GR 221 long-distance hiking trail, very quickly (approx. 30 min - 1 hour drive). If you don't just want a walking holiday on Mallorca, you can find numerous other diversions in and around Palma.

Hiking holiday Mallorca: West coast (Estellencs to Port de Sa Calobra)

GR 221 Wanderurlaub auf Mallorca

The spectacular west coast is formed by the Serra de Tramuntana and is therefore perfect for a hiking holiday on Mallorca. However, the biggest disadvantage of the west coast is that due to the sometimes very narrow and winding roads, which often have to be travelled slowly (max. 50 km/h), there are only poor transport connections to the rest of the island. Many excursions and tours on Mallorca are offered island-wide - with the exception of the west coast, as picking up guests there would take a very long time. So if you are planning a pure hiking holiday on Mallorca, you will find romantic villages and countless hiking routes in the untouched nature on the west coast - but in the evening there is usually not much going on in the sleepy mountain villages and even with a hire car, the journey to the rest of the island takes a very long time (approx. 1-2 hours drive). On the other hand, there is pure relaxation, far away from any tourist hustle and bustle.

Hiking holiday Mallorca: North coast (Cala San Vicente to Can Picafort)

The beautiful north coast offers long sandy beaches and mountains - an ideal combination for a hiking holiday in Mallorca. Thanks to the motorway, you can reach the north coast from Palma in approx. 30 minutes - 1 hour and the transport connections on the north coast are also very good. There are numerous coastal walks and hikes to secluded bays, such as the descent to Cala Figuera or the hike to Coll Baix. The three northern headlands of Mallorca, the Formentor peninsula, the La Victoria peninsula and the north-eastern tip around Cap Farrutx offer numerous mountains and breathtaking views of the coasts, the turquoise-blue bays and all the way inland. The north coast is therefore very suitable for a varied hiking holiday on Mallorca.

Hiking holiday Mallorca: East coast (Cala Mesquida to Cala Santanyi)

The east coast of Mallorca is also suitable for a hiking holiday. There are numerous smaller mountains and hills on the east coast up to around 500-600 metres above sea level, which are ideal for easy hikes, and you can also enjoy a large number of beautiful coastal walks on the east coast. However, the east coast is very touristy in summer and only a few hotels are open in winter (the best hiking season). In addition, the transport connections in the east are not very good, as there are only country roads and no motorway - to Palma or the Serra de Tramuntana you have to reckon with journey times of approx. 1-1.5 hours.
