Detailed description

Tramuntana Hike on Mallorca from Palma: on the historic post route from Esporles to Banyalbufar

Leave city life in Palma behind for a wonderful day trip and hike the historic post route from Esporles to Banyalbufar in front of the impressive backdrop of the Tramuntana. Both villages are charming witnesses of rural Mallorca, surrounded by olive groves and terraced fields. The walk is also accompanied by old holm oaks, traces of Moorish architecture and breathtaking views of the sea and coast. You picnic in a quiet bay on the west coast, which is still something of an insider's tip, and enjoy Majorcan snacks from an old village bakery. The Tramuntana hike, which starts in Palma, is an ideal combination of a city holiday and nature experience in Mallorca.

You start the day trip in the centre of Palma, where you meet your guide and get a first overview of the upcoming hike. By bus it goes from Palma to Esporles, starting point of this Tramuntana migration. The approximately 10 km long stretch from Esporles to Banyalbufar is part of the famous dry-stone walkway (GR-221). The route is well signposted and easy to walk despite the mostly stony subsoil. Solid shoes are indispensable. There are some gradients and curves, especially on the way there, but these can also be mastered by inexperienced hikers with moderate speed and small breaks. On the 3-hour hike you will climb 300 metres uphill and 400 metres downhill. Part of the path leads us over old cobblestones, you hike in the shade of old holm oaks and reach a platform with spectacular views.

Banyalbufar is a picturesque mountain village in the Tramuntana with charming architecture and authentic character. Once there, we hike down to the sea and discover a pebble beach that is mainly visited by Mallorcans in summer. For us it is the perfect place to end the Tramuntana hike with a picnic and a bathing break (in good weather). From the beach we finally walk back a bit and take the bus to Palma. If you do not yet know the west coast of Mallorca and would like to experience a completely different part of the island, the Tramuntana hike from Esporles to Banyalbufar is the best recommendation.
