Excursions & activities in Lanzarote for the whole family
Lanzarote is not a typical Canary Island and that is exactly what makes it so special. Here, black and reddish volcanic rock meets white sand. This sometimes gives you the feeling of being on another planet. UNESCO was also convinced of the island's unique natural landscape back in 1993, so Lanzarote was declared a biosphere reserve in the same year.
The entire island radiates a deep sense of peace and tranquillity. The islanders are a very hospitable people, which is perhaps also due to the many hours of sunshine. The island is particularly popular with athletes from Europe, as the long sunny days and pleasant temperatures (which never fall below 18 degrees) provide the perfect conditions for runners, racing cyclists, swimmers and many other (water) sports enthusiasts. Many athletes therefore set up their training camp on Lanzarote.
Those who don't like it quite so sporty can be carried through the dunes on the back of a camel as part of a camel safari.
Wine lovers will also get their money's worth: very good wine is produced on the island. Accordingly, there are many wine cellars (bodegas) on Lanzarote where you can try a tasting or two of the excellent Malvasia wines and form your own judgement.
The wine-growing region of La Geria is a unique and very elaborately cultivated wine-growing region of Lanzarote. It has many conical indentations in the lava soil to protect the individual vines with their small stone walls from the wind. The result of this careful cultivation is outstanding wines with a designation of origin.
In the south of the island, far away from civilisation, lies the beautiful Papagayo beach. The bay is surrounded by enchanting, unspoilt and protected nature. When you see the white sandy beach and the green-turquoise sea, you won't want to leave this dreamy place. And you won't have to for a while, because there is a small restaurant on the beach where you can have lunch.
The legacy of César Manrique is also a popular excursion destination. Every year, thousands of tourists make a pilgrimage to the foundation of the same name to admire his ingenious works in the marvellous natural surroundings. There is also a great viewpoint where you can admire César Manrique's works of art from above. Even if you are not an art lover, this site is well worth a visit.
The Cueva de los Verdes takes you directly into the bowels of the earth. The cave was once a pirate's nest formed from cooled lava. The splendid colours of the red rusty basalt stones, the ochre-yellow rocks and the green reflection of the light on the salt crystals in the water will take your breath away. Inside the cave, there are numerous places to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.
The legendary jeep safari through the diverse nature of Lanzarote is also fun for young and old. Or take the whole family to the Guinate Tropical Park in the north of the island. The Tropical Park is located in the small, idyllic village of Guinate, which lies in the north-eastern part of Lanzarote. The Guinate Tropical Park is one of the most important sights on the island of Lanzarote. The park is home to a variety of 1300 exotic bird species and animals in an environment modelled on their natural habitat.
The El Golfo crater is an absolute must-see. It is located south of the former fishing village of El Golfo. It is one of the most famous sights in Lazarote. El Golfo is a crater of the Montaña de Golfo volcano, which is partially submerged in the sea. The special thing about it is that a poisonous green lagoon has formed in the crater, which lies around 50 metres from the coast and is open to the sea. The green lagoon was formed after its eruption in 1730 when the crater was flooded. The poisonous green colour comes from the algae that formed on the surface of the water.
The sight of the lush green surrounded by the black sand, the rust-red and ochre rocks and the blue of the sea is one you won't soon forget. Don't forget to take a camera and try to see El Golfo at sunset.
And if you really want to relax, we recommend a trip to the island of La Graciosa in the north of Lazarote. It is the only inhabited island in the Chinijo archipelago. La Graciosa and Chinijo are probably the only places in Europe without a tarmac road.
Enjoy the tranquillity and timelessness that prevails there, for example on one of the beautiful, light-coloured sandy beaches.
Active holidays on Lanzarote, the somewhat different island. Although the entire island exudes a deep sense of peace and tranquillity, it offers a wide and varied selection of exciting leisure activities.
