Los Hervideros

Lanzarote Reiseführer Los Hervideros
The natural attraction Los Hervideros.

The boiling pots - a fitting name for this place. The natural attraction Los Hervideros is located on the west coast of Lanzarote. This unique geological formation was created by the cooling and solidification of lava that flowed into the sea thousands of years ago. The waves of the Atlantic break on the jagged black rocks and create an incredible spectacle of waterspouts and fountains. The pressure and force of the waves penetrate through narrow channels and crevices, causing the water to boil and bubble.

The area can be explored via a series of walkways and platforms set into the rock formations. From the walkways, there are breathtaking views of the coastline and the mighty waves breaking on the cliffs, creating a dramatic spectacle. There are also natural pools and caves for visitors to explore, adding to the appeal of this unique attraction.

Jardin de Cactus

Lanzarote Reiseführer Jardin de cactus
The cactus garden is open daily and the entrance fee is moderate.

The impressive cactus garden in Guatiza is also the work of César Manrique. The artist and architect turned a quarry into an impressive cactus landscape with plants from all over the world. The 5,000 square metre refuge was inaugurated in 1990 and is currently home to around 1,500 different species. In the centre of the garden is a restored old windmill, which now houses a café where visitors can enjoy drinks and light meals. There is also a souvenir shop where you can buy souvenirs of cacti and Manrique's work.

Salinas de Janubio

Lanzarote Reiseführer Salinas
The Salinas de Janubio.

The Salinas de Janubio are an impressive salt flats complex on the south-west coast of Lanzarote. The salt flats are considered to be the largest in the Canary Islands and have been an important site for salt production for over 100 years. The landscape of the Salinas de Janubio is truly impressive.

The complex covers a large area and consists of a series of interconnected ponds and canals. The ponds are fed by seawater, which evaporates through a natural evaporation process of sun and wind, leaving the salt behind. The result is a spectacular landscape with ponds in various shades of blue and white that contrast with the dark volcanic earth of the island.

The Salinas de Janubio are not only a place where salt is extracted, but also an important habitat for migratory birds. At certain times of the year, flamingos and other water birds can be seen seeking refuge in the salt flats.

Montaña de Guenia

Lanzarote Reiseführer montanas
Montaña de Guenia.

The Montaña de Guenia is a volcano in the central region of the island, close to the Timanfaya National Park. Although Montaña de Guenia is not as well known as other volcanoes on the island, such as Timanfaya or Volcán de La Corona, it is well worth a visit due to its scenic beauty and geological significance.

Monte Guenia was formed by volcanic eruptions that took place on Lanzarote millions of years ago. It is part of the volcanic complex that makes up the island and has a characteristic conical shape. Although it is no longer active today, its shape and volcanic structure bear witness to the island's volcanic past.

A special feature of Montaña de Guenia is its soil. It consists of lapilli, small volcanic stones and solidified ash that were deposited during the eruptions. This volcanic soil is infertile and unfavourable for the growth of vegetation, which contributes to the desert-like, moon-like landscape in this area.
