5 tips for hiking on Mallorca

1. not all paths are well signposted.
If you've never been hiking on Mallorca before, you'll soon realise: Some of the hiking routes are well signposted, others almost not at all. Without local knowledge, a good hiking map or a very keen eye, sometimes you won't get any further. Look out for cairns (stones stacked on top of each other), which the Mallorcans use to mark the hiking trails (if you don't know which way to go, our Mallorca hiking tip is: follow the paths where there are cairns), or look out for branches on the ground (at crossroads, "wrong" paths are often demarcated with branches so that you automatically follow the "right" path). Trees or rocks are also often used to carve / paint arrows / words.

2. not all paths are circular hiking trails.
If you have parked the hire car at the starting point but are not doing a circular walk, you have several options. Our Mallorca hiking tips: Park a second car at the end point first, then drive to the starting point together and start hiking; choose an end point with a bus connection / taxi back to the starting point or make the hike only half as long so that you have enough strength and stamina for the return hike on the same path.

3. do not underestimate the landscape.
If you think of hiking on Mallorca as flat plains and easy paths along the coast, you're far from it: the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range is home to several thousand metre peaks and the terrain is alpine in places. Keep in mind that Mallorca is mostly made of stone, there are many steep paths with loose scree (beware, danger of slipping) and some of the most enchanting landscapes are far away from roads, shops, civilisation and mobile phone reception. One of the most important Mallorca hiking tips: Remember to take enough energy-rich provisions (fruit, nuts, a sandwich, snacks) and water (for easy hikes at least 1.5 litres, for day hikes at least 3 litres of water).

4. inform yourself in advance.
If you are not taking part in a guided hike, do your homework beforehand. Our Mallorca hiking tip: research the length and altitude of the tour (so that you can assess whether you are in the right physical condition for it), make a note of the exact route, take a hiking map with you or follow the route using GPS. If you are doing difficult hikes deep in the mountains / far away from civilisation, inform the hotel reception about your hike, for example, so that someone knows where you are if you are not back in time for nightfall.

5 Climbing over fences is permitted.
Some hiking trails cross private land where sheep or other animals graze. If a hiking trail ends at a fence and you find a ladder/climb over the fence, you are allowed to climb over it. One of the most urgent Mallorca hiking tips: If you come to an open/closed gate on a hike and are supposed to cross it according to the hiking route, leave the gate as you found it either open or closed.

These are our most important tips for hiking on Mallorca. If you follow these tips, you can relax and enjoy the idyllic landscape and unwind while hiking on the island's most beautiful routes. We wish you lots of fun!
