Sailing packing list - what do I need to take sailing?

Whether you are going on a longer sailing trip lasting several days or a short sailing trip, there are a few things you should always take with you. To make it easier for you to pack for sailing, we have compiled two different packing lists for you: One for short sailing trips and one for longer trips. You can simply download the lists and tick them off as you pack - that way you won't forget anything! When packing, also remember to take handy luggage that can be easily stowed away, i.e. rucksacks and travelling bags, not suitcases. The less, the better, as there is usually little space on board.

Clothing

The most important thing is the right clothing. Depending on whether you are sailing on Mallorca in spring/autumn, summer or winter, you will need clothing of different thickness and warmth. In spring and autumn it is pleasantly warm in the sun during the day, but the winds are cool and a jacket or thick jumper is recommended, especially in the lower temperatures in the morning or at night. In summer, you should remember to pack enough clothing to cover your body to avoid sunburn. Light blouses or shirts are comfortable even in hot weather and protect your skin. Shoes should have a light-coloured sole to avoid leaving marks on the boat. When packing for longer sailing trips, also think about bathing shoes for showers or for going ashore in rocky bays. In summer, people often sail barefoot. A good, tight-fitting headgear should not be missing, which cannot be easily blown away by the wind, as well as good sunglasses.

Hygiene and sanitary requirements

Instead of a cosmetics case, pack a toiletry bag that is easier to stow away. A sun cream with a high sun protection factor should always be packed when sailing in the Mediterranean, and sunscreen lip balm is also advisable. Pack medication against seasickness, as well as insect repellent for longer sailing trips. Handkerchiefs are often missing on board, and wet wipes are also useful in many situations (but never throw them into the on-board toilet, as this will clog the pipe and make the skipper angry).

Entertainment

Even though looking at the sea for hours on end is an incredibly relaxing activity for the mind, you should pack a good book, games or music for longer trips. Don't forget your camera either.

Active sailing / longer trips

If you want to sail along actively, it is best to pack gloves and sufficient waterproof or quick-drying clothing. If you are spending the night on deck, pack a sleeping mat and a sleeping bag. If you are sleeping below deck, earplugs can help you fall asleep, and you should also pack bed linen if necessary. Don't forget your sailing tools (logbook, binoculars, pocket knife, radio, spare tape, cable ties, etc.) just in case.

Food and drinks

Depending on the booking option, you will be provided with food and drinks on a day sailing trip. As soon as you charter exclusively or sail on a longer trip, you will have to organise your own food and drinks in consultation with your fellow sailors. Nevertheless, it is always advisable to pack a bottle of water and a few snacks (that won't melt in the sun).
