An innovative aquarium in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria

Your holiday on the Canary Islands has become even more spectacular since January 2018: with the newly constructed large aquarium in Las Palmas there is a new attraction in the harbour for all of the locals and visitors to Gran Canaria. The aim of this new tourist attraction on the Canary Island is to make the breath-taking range of species accessible to its visitors. There are about 350 native and exotic animal species in the Poema del Mar Aquarium, which means the "Poem of the Sea" in English. The interesting and modern architecture and the huge glass windows invite you to stop and study the sea creatures. The aquarium in Las Palmas covers an area of around 12,500 m2 with 35 marine ecosystems.

The Poema del Mar is made up of three areas: the jungle area, the reef section and deep sea room. A special underwater experience is offered in the reef room, as there is a 40,000 litre cylindrical tank filled with coral reefs. You will also have a panoramic view of parrot fish, moray eels and many other species. There is also the in-house restaurant, which is surrounded by huge aquariums for a very special maritime ambience. The aquarium also has well prepared information boards about the animals, so that if you want to and you have time, you can learn some interesting details about the marine animals. In the deep sea area you will find the largest round disc ever produced in the world, which set a world record. This is particularly exciting for visitors: it is 7 metres high, 36 metres wide and made of about 140 tonnes of Italian glass – this is undoubtedly an impressive structure.
