Moscatel and Port wine tour from Porto in the Alto Douro wine region – when delight and nature unite harmoniously
Go on a wine tour in Porto and taste the traditional port wine and Moscatel in the marvellous Douro valley. The excursion in the north of Portugal leaves nothing to be desired: great vantage points, unique natural beauty, wine tasting, a traditional lunch and much more. The day trip from Porto starts directly at your accommodation, where you will be picked up in the morning hours. An experienced driver-guide accompanies the varied wine experience tour, which leads you through the wine-growing region Alto Douro.
The Porto wine tour takes you east towards the Portuguese town of Amarante. Here you stop to explore the historic city. Amarante is famous for its historic centre with the imposing bridge of Saint Gonçalo (Ponte de São Gonçalo), which crosses the Tâmega (a tributary of the Douro). You will visit the São Gonçalo monastery church of the same name and learn more about its architecture. Next you will reach the first wine hotspot of the Porto day tour. You will visit a famous winery in the heart of the Douro region that specialises in Moscatel wines. The sweet dessert wines, which you will taste, have a unique aroma. After a delightful stop, the wine tour continues from Porto to the small town of Pinhão in the Douro valley. Here you will stop at a restaurant to have a traditional lunch accompanied by wine. The Portuguese also like to dine here. You know what they say: if the locals are here, it must be good!
Here, in the middle of the very scenic port wine growing area Alto Douro, you will be taken to a vantage point from where you can admire the full magnificence of the region. The terrace of Casa de Casal de Loivos, a historic mansion, has been chosen by the BBC as one of the six most beautiful viewpoints in the world. Here you can spend some time and enjoy the fantastic panorama of the Douro valley with its endless vineyards.
The last item on the Porto wine tour programme is a family-run estate in the immediate vicinity of the manor house. In addition to the Douro DOC wines you will also taste olive oil and nuts, while you continue to enjoy the magnificent view of the Douro river. At the port wine tasting you will learn more about the traditional, world-famous wine and its production, cultivation and storage. A grand finale before the delightful trip slowly draws to a close. The full day tour ends in Porto in the early evening.
