Detailed description

Tour Madeira by bus: Travel around the East Coast of the Portuguese Island

Explore the east of the Portuguese volcanic island of Madeira with this all-day bus tour and come to know why this island of magnificent mountains, captivating cliffs and pretty peaks goes by the name of Flower Island. There are stunning plateaus scattered among the wooded mountain slopes between the bare-rock peaks and it’s quite a sight to see. The one-of-a-kind farmland and range of climates on the island make for a unique scenery in Madeira.

The all-day bus tour in the east of Madeira makes its way from Funchal to Camacha. The road is lined with orchards and blue Agapanthus flowers: these can be admired in summer. Camacha is based up high in Madeira. Stop off there and meander around the market which is full of wickerwork. Follow the path uphill towards Pico Arieiro (which stands at 1818 metres high). The bus tour weaves through the green-wooded hillside up to the bare-rock peak. Stand above the clouds in the valleys and look down on the Portuguese island. Continue through the fruit farms to Ribeiro Frio which is a wonderful place in the Laurissilva Forest (a World Heritage Site).

The next stop is in the village of Santana, a village that went from rags to riches thanks to terraced farming. The A-form houses are very typical in Madeira and once served as cowsheds due to their sheer size which you’ll notice when you see them in the flesh. Follow the footsteps of local agriculture on this bus tour through East Madeira. Take the road down to Porto da Cruz which is a village at the bottom of the Penha d' Aguia rock. You’ll seemingly stumble across the only sugar factory still going in Madeira there. The beautiful beach promenade invites you to linger along it before you go over to Machico Bay.

Those travelling from Portugal always ended up in Machico Bay. Sugar cane played quite a big role in the island’s early economy. The 320m-high Pico do Facho was the lookout point where the locals used to keep an eye out for pirates. Round up the tour in Ponta de São Lourenço and fingers crossed the weather behaves itself, so you can get panoramic views across the entire East Coast.

Ziemlich vollgepackt

Ziemlich vollgepackte Tour. Die Insel ist wirklich sehenswert. Zum Glück nicht zu viele Leute wie bei anderen solchen Touren.

We had the best guide in the world :)

Our English tour guide was the best guide ever. Its such a shame I dont remember his name because I would have loved mentioning him here and congrat him for how much he knew and cared about the whole thing! He made that day our best day in Madeira.
