Detailed description

Rhodes: discover from the north the Filerimos Hill & the Valley of the Butterflies

You will get to know two important sights of the island at once during the relaxed half-day tour on Rhodes with transfer from the north: the Filerimos Hill and the Valley of the Butterflies. The bus trip starts comfortably at or near your hotel. The stops at both sights provide ample time to explore them on your own. First destination of the bus tour is the famous Valley of Butterflies. Between June and September the habitat of the aromatic amber trees is the home of millions of butterflies, which rest close together on trees and bushes during the day to have enough energy for mating at night.

Among the rare and special moments is of course the swarming of the pretty butterflies. But even beyond that, this place is a wild and romantic oasis that is well worth a visit. With narrow rock paths, lakes adorned with water lilies, rustic bridges, flowing waters, waterfalls and resting places, the Valley of the Butterflies is a green paradise of the island world. Take time for a short hike or visit the small museum where you will learn more about the butterfly species.

After this eventful stop we continue the Rhodes half day tour towards IaIyssos. There, the Filerimos Hill, another special feature of the island awaits us. If you want to visit the monastery of the same name, you have to climb up to the plateau at a height of 270 metres. At the flanks of the hill the road winds along which we follow up to the parking place. There are also the few remains of the ancient Acropolis Filerimos and there is also a lot to see at the place that is translated as "friend of solitude". From here you can visit on your own the impressive 10th century monastery and the St. John's Church (15th century) or follow the Golgotha path lined with trees and Stations of the Cross. At the end of this path an impressive, accessible concrete cross awaits you. Inside, steps lead up to the viewing platform, which offers a wonderful view of the north of the island.

By visiting the Filerimos Hill we have almost reached the end of our Rhodes excursion. In the early afternoon we will take you back to the starting point of the tour via the West Coast Road and bid you farewell with new impressions of the island, which with the sights of Filerimos Hill and Butterfly Day reveals two more facets and its incredible wealth.

A must for friends of the Lepis

I am a hobby lepidopterist. (Greek lepis = butterfly) And had already heard of the valley. Could discover several of the beautiful insects that I have never seen alive and fluttering happily before. The tour was too short for me ...!
