The best months for sailing
In general, it can be said that sailing on Mallorca is possible all year round, as can be seen from the sailing weather. However, there are a few months that are rather suboptimal for sailing. The perfect sailing weather on Mallorca is from April to the beginning of June, as the temperatures are ideally warm (but not too hot). Swimming breaks are possible while sailing, as the water is at a pleasant temperature. In addition, the bathing bays are not yet so extremely crowded during this period and you can look forward to quiet anchorage breaks. The sailing weather is also usually good in autumn (September and October), when the biggest tourist rush is already over. However, due to the change in temperature, the first heavy storms also begin during this time. Even in the high season in July and August, it is better to be on the water than on land, as the temperatures climb to their highest levels during this time - although the bays and beaches are full to the brim during this time. The months of January to mid-March are less recommendable, as the temperatures are at their lowest during this time and you can also expect more severe storms in the meantime.
Sailing weather: wind forces on Mallorca
Normally, a relatively constant wind force of 2-3 Beaufort builds up on Mallorca in the mornings, increasing to up to 4 Beaufort in the afternoon. The wind drops again in the evening. Wind forces of up to 6 Beaufort can be reached from March to April and in October. When sailing on Mallorca, bear in mind that mistral winds of up to 50 knots often blow from the north/north-west. Due to the formation of the mistral, a strong wind can only be predicted at short notice, usually only lasting 2-3 days and generating waves over 2 metres high. The hot Scirocco blows on Mallorca from the south, the Levante from the east (in the summer months with up to 5 Beaufort) and the Poniente from the west (tends to blow less frequently and only in the summer months). The Scirocco is dangerous because it can occur almost all year round from spring to autumn and often carries sand dust from Africa, which severely impairs visibility.
Swell
The normal swell on Mallorca is between 0.5 and 1 metre, with stronger winds it can be up to 3 metres. A peculiarity that is repeatedly observed on the Balearic Islands and has not yet been finally clarified are strong and short-term fluctuations in the sea level. As a result, a bay can be almost drained within a very short time, as can the anchored ships - which can lead to expensive and severe damage to the ships. However, this occurs more frequently in Menorca. Please also note that the scirocco winds are usually preceded by a strong swell and high waves can occur.
