Detailed description

Take a nature tour around a beautiful botanical garden in Pontevedra and feel the fantastic flora from all around

Galicia is green from top to bottom! It looks more like Ireland than Spain. The mild temperature, the relatively high rainfall and humidity make it the perfect place for many indigenous plants. In the forest they’ve been able to grow eucalyptus trees as well. At the end of the way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago) there are marvellous meadows full of flowers. It’s a stunning spot to spend your summer in. The Pontevedra botanical garden is well-worth visiting whilst on holiday in Galicia.

What sets this botanical garden apart from many others of this nature is that it is a private one. The owners have opened their arms to the public so that people can marvel at its beauty. The only thing you need to do is let them know that you’re coming well ahead of time and the entire thing is there for you to explore. The tour kicks off at the atrium where you’ll get the 411 about where the tour goes and what you’ll see before you set off.

You can admire all kinds of colourful blossoms at the Manor House before you even get in to the thick of the flora. The 19th-century chapel is the first stop on the nature tour through the stunning estate, find out all about its history. Feel free to ask your tour guide any questions you might have along the way. Next, spot the large granary which was where the field crops used to be stored. Without further ado it’s on to the flowers.

Head through the botanical gardens into an 18th-century dovecote, which has since been converted into a small vineyard. When the camellias begin to blossom in Galicia, it really sets the scene. The estate boasts over 230 different varieties, so you can experience the multi-faceted flowering up close and personal. There are more than 800 plant species in total which you are free to admire.

You’ll visit three magnificent meadows and a forest full of rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas and then make your way back to the property and the shop where you are welcome to write a small note about your time at the gardens. The botanical gardens offer a magical experience for all the family. There is the chance to have a glass of wine or a G&T and finish the day with a proper farewell.
