Booking option: Tenerife Hike on the Teno Plateau

The moderately difficult hike through the Teno Landscape Park starts at about 1000 meters in Erjos. We hike through the pond landscape, which is mostly dried out in summer, through pine forest, past gorse and fennel up to the pass between the small and the big Gala and enjoy the fantastic views of the Masca massif and the Teide, among others. Passing the Cumbres de Bolico we continue in direction to Masca and from the path we marvel at the mountain landscape around the Masca canyon.

Up to the seventies, the Teno region was formally cut off from the rest of the island. For a long time, a very traditional way of life dominated here, revolving around agriculture and livestock farming adapted to the conditions. On the Teno hike we will pass through different ecosystems of the island, Canary Island pine forest, laurel forest, past pastures and through areas with the typical terraced fields. For the finale of the Tenerife hike we will take a boat trip of about 2 hours to the cliffs of Los Gigantes and then return to Puerto de la Cruz.

Detailed description

Tenerife Hike in the Teno Massif to Masca

If you are looking for a worthy alternative to the Masca Canyon Hike on Tenerife, this panoramic hike in the northwest of the island is the right choice. The hike in the Teno Massif to Masca is an impressive ridge walk, with views of level gorges and laurel-covered slopes. The starting point of the hike is in Erjos at an altitude of more than 1000 metres. The hike in the Teno Massif is about 9 kilometres long and with a walking time of about 4 hours on earthy, partly stony paths, it is a moderately difficult tour. A good physical condition and sure-footedness make hiking in the mountains easier. An experienced and local guide will accompany you on the trails.

From Erjos we follow the path through Canarian pine forest and climb up to the laurel. The hike takes us directly to the peaks of the Teno massif: the big Gala (1354m), the small Gala (1318m) and the Bolico (1176m). The high trail at the weather divide gives us, if the weather is good, wonderful views over the Teno mountains and finally to the mountain village Masca with its famous gorge. If the weather is fine with us, enjoy in between a unique panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, the neighbouring islands of Tenerife or into the valleys. On some days the northern slope of the Teno massif is shrouded in thick fog. The trade winds carry humidity to the slope and it is this special climate in which the laurel forest of Tenerife thrives.

During this Tenerife hiking tour we will encounter different ecosystems, roam through pine forests and get fed up with the spurge plants that are typical for Tenerife. In parts of the Teno Landscape Park, wheat was also cultivated and threshed in former times. We will see such old places as well as the bread and brick ovens of the rural population. The pace of the hike is adapted to the group, breaks are planned. As a relaxed conclusion to this Teno hiking tour in Tenerife, a boat trip to the cliffs of Los Gigantes is a good idea. Almost 500 meters the cliffs at this western point of Tenerife plunge into the sea and form - this time with the view from the bottom to the top - an impressive scenery. It is very likely that dolphins, sometimes whales, are also seen on the way.
