Detailed description

Volcano hike in Tenerife: on the tracks of fire mountains Chinyero and Garachico

In November 1909, it was the last eruption on Tenerife for the time being, when the ashes shot up from the Chinyero gorge. The youngest eruption area of the island is located at the north-west of the Teide and belongs to the most impressive lava areas of the whole island. Our volcano hike on Tenerife follows the traces of the fire mountains over a pitch-black ground and through the deep green pine forest of the Corona Forestal. The Garachico volcano (Montana Negra), we will also see during this tour, was last active in the year 1706 and mainly gushed in western direction. There is the harbour city of the same name that was almost completely buried under the lava flows and then had to be rebuilt on a headland.

Specially the varied scenery of lava sand and forest soil makes the volcano hike around the Chinyero for many people the most beautiful hike in Tenerife. The Teide as a trademark of the island is a constant companion on the way and repeatedely, the surrounding mountains appear in our field of vision. Around the Chinyero volcano, there is a round path of approximately 6 kilometres length that is mainly surrounded by stones with a barely noticeable ascent. The volcano hike at an altitude of 1450 to 1550 meters is easy to master, although due to the partially loose volcanic rock, surefootedness is required. The cinder cone of the Chinyero is surrounded by a 24 square kilometre natural park to protect the sensitive lava landscape and one of the most important water supply areas of the island.

The volcano hike around the Chinyero and the Garachico offers us about 3 hours of pure hiking pleasure and at the same time countless contrasts of an impressive scenic beauty. The hike is suitable for all ages with some basic fitness. Whoever wants to get close to the volcanoes on Tenerife has chosen the Fire Mountains as a wonderful hiking destination. Nowhere else the recent eruption history of the island can be followed so intensively as on the black lava paths around the Chinyero. And nowhere else is the elemental force of nature, which is constantly renewing itself, so impressive.
