How does berth charter in Mallorca work?
Berth charter is a very simple principle: instead of bearing the entire cost of the sailing boat on your own (which definitely adds up if you charter for several days), chartering a berth (= a bed in a cabin) is the cheapest way to sail along for one or more days. An experienced skipper or other fellow sailors sail the boat, so that the berth charter is also suitable for sailing beginners. Berth charter is not only very popular in Mallorca for inexpensive round trips, for example the sailing trip around Mallorca, which lasts approx. 6 days with relaxed sailing. Berth charter is suitable for:
- Sailing fans who would like to sail for several days at a time
- Sailing fans and those who want to become one, who have to watch their wallet (berth charter is cheaper than sailboat charter)
- Holidaymakers looking for a change from a hotel holiday
- Adventurous travellers who want to see something new every day
- Social travellers who like to meet new people and plan things together
- Solo travellers who want to get to know other solo travellers
- Novice sailors who would like to gain more sailing experience and nautical miles
- Experienced sailors who like to lend a hand
As you can see, berth charter is a varied way to spend a week's holiday - especially with the Mallorca berth charter for the round trip, you can explore the entire coast of the Mediterranean island and experience its most beautiful corners.
How does a Mallorca berth charter work?
Now that we have clarified exactly what a berth charter means, let's get down to business: How does a berth charter work? Firstly, there are usually fixed dates on which sailing boats sail with a skipper or other sailors look for fellow sailors. Then you book your favourite trip (see also below). Now you need to pack the right things (see also: Sailing packing list), as there is usually very little space on board, so you are best served with a rucksack or a travelling bag (not a suitcase).
On the start date, you will come to the sailing boat with your light sailor's luggage to move into your chartered berth. You will get to know your fellow sailors and the skipper. First of all, the route is discussed, as you all have to decide on a route together when chartering a berth - however, there are usually hardly any problems, and the skipper is also very good at estimating how long the sailing boat will need for which route and which sights are worth seeing on the coast. In addition, the skipper usually knows a secret corner or two - an ideal anchorage in front of a dreamy cave or a secluded bay that you can only reach by sailing boat. Then it's time to set sail!
Depending on the berth charter offer, various things are included in the price. For berth charters in Mallorca and worldwide, it is typical to set up an on-board fund into which all fellow sailors pay and from which the food and expenses (diesel, mooring fees) are then paid jointly - which depend on the group's decision on the route. This makes it possible to share the costs fairly. You sail along the previously planned route, although there is of course always the option of changing the route spontaneously, for example if the weather changes. You can anchor in secluded bays at night or pay the mooring fees directly in the town harbour and go out together or alone at night. A berth charter is the ideal way to sail for several days at low cost and flexibly - perhaps for you too?
