On the day trip to Nisyros Island, an impressive volcanic landscape and the picturesque harbour town of Mandraki await you. You will meet the skipper in the harbour of Kardamena and board the boat here. During the one-hour crossing, you can listen to interesting stories about Nisyros and Kos. Once on the island, you go directly to the volcano by bus. While standing at the crater, you can feel the energy of the lava surging deep beneath your feet. The bubbling mud pools and geysers are reminiscent of a lunar landscape.

Afterwards, you will go to the village of Mandraki, which is characterised by narrow streets and houses in typical blue and white paintings. After a short walk through one of the alleys, you will find the famous monastery of Panagia Spiliani. With one look, you will understand why this is considered one of the most beautiful monasteries on the Greek islands. Finally, you will have time to stroll freely through Mandraki and have lunch in a typical Greek restaurant, for example. Around 4 pm you will return to Kardamena.

Detailed description

Spend a day on the island of Nisyros off Kos

On this tour to the island of Nisyros you will not only learn interesting facts about the history of the island, but you can also see for yourself the beautiful harbour town of Mandraki and the spectacular volcanic craters. The tour departs from the port of Kardamena, transfers from most of Kos are still included. The full-day tour starts with a one-hour boat trip to the island of Nisyros. While you hear about the history of the island on the way, you can already marvel at the 3-4 km wide caldera on approach, which is around 250m deep. With a width of only 9 km, the view of Nisyros from the boat is therefore very special.

Once you leave the boat, a bus will take you directly to the volcano. Nisyros is actually home to several craters, which were created by violent steam explosions. Here you will also see bubbling mud pools and geysers, reminiscent of a lunar landscape.

Afterwards, you will drive back to the harbour in Mandraki. There you will see typical Greek houses painted in blue and white and narrow streets. After a short walk, you can visit the monastery of Panagia Spiliani, which is situated on a hill and impresses in all its beauty. From here you have a panoramic view of the sea and Pythagorio. The centuries-old cave chapel of the monastery is also worth a visit. Before you return to Kos, you will have enough time to stroll through the alleys of Mandraki and enjoy the beauty of Nisyros.
