Detailed description

Hiking in Lanzarote: La Corona Volcano and Famara Cliffs

On this hike you will have the unique opportunity to explore two breathtaking nature reserves on Lanzarote and experience the fascinating landscape and the rich flora and fauna of the island.

Your journey begins in the picturesque village of "Ye," from where you set out to climb the majestic volcano La Corona. This volcano rises to about 609 metres above sea level and is one of the highest volcanoes on the island. As you make the climb, you will witness the fascinating 'malpais', a lava flow lined with basalt blocks. These basalt formations give the surroundings a unique aesthetic. Likewise, you will notice how the vineyards nestle into the volcanic terrain, enhancing the scenery with their lush green vines.

When you finally reach the top of the volcano, your gaze is rewarded with a breathtaking view of the 7.6-kilometre-long lava tunnel. This geological formation is of particular importance because part of the tunnel, which stretches over 1.6 kilometres, is now under water. This is due to the rise in sea level since the last volcanic eruption during the Ice Age. The hike along the volcano and the view of the lava tunnel offer you a fascinating insight into the geological history of Lanzarote.

Your adventure continues as you reach the second highlight of this tour: the impressive cliffs of Famara in the Chinijo Archipelago Nature Park. The majestic cliffs rise up to 500 metres above sea level and stretch for an impressive 22 kilometres along the coast. From this vantage point you can admire the highest peak in Lanzarote, the Peñas del Chache. These cliffs are not only an imposing natural wonder, but they also play an important role in creating a unique microclimate.

The prevailing trade winds and the imposing height of the cliffs provide ideal conditions for the region's flora. A wide variety of flowering plants can be found along the cliffs and in the surrounding areas, including numerous endemisms that are specially adapted to this environment. The guide will be happy to tell you more about this fascinating flora.

In addition to the impressive flora, you should not overlook the birdlife in this region. Your guide will provide you with information about the diversity of birds in the area, including migratory and endemic species. The combination of spectacular scenery and diverse wildlife makes this walk an unforgettable experience and a great way to discover the natural beauty of Lanzarote.
