Starting in the centre of Firgas, we visit the church of San Roque and learn about the use of the irrigation canal. We then stop at a viewpoint to enjoy the magnificent panoramic views over the north of Gran Canaria, from the coast to the peaks of the island. Then the descent into the Azuaje ravine begins. On the way down, you will see in the undergrowth the remains of a spa built between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. From here we cross a stream area where we have to negotiate rocks and tree trunks. We also have to climb a rock with a lifeline to make sure nothing happens to us and our adrenaline levels rise. At the end of the ravine we see the agriculture and livestock of the region. Back in Firgas, we visit the Paseo de Canarias, a slope with a stone replica of the archipelago and the coats of arms of each island. We continue to the Paseo de Gran Canaria, where the coats of arms of all the island's municipalities are displayed next to an artificial waterfall.

Hike through the Azuaje gorge in the north of Gran Canaria

The gorge of Azuaje on Gran Canaria is considered to be one of the greenest and most beautiful. This is mainly due to the water for which Firgas is so well known. The beautiful town in the north is the starting point for this half-day guided hike. We walk a circular route of around 7 kilometres. Hikers with good basic fitness and sure-footedness will enjoy this trail, which leads us from viewpoints down into the gorge. We climb around 276 metres in altitude on this hike in the north of Gran Canaria. There are some inclines and rocks to overcome and we cross a stream. Wet terrain.

The starting point is Firgas, which is known and loved for its springs. The history of the numerous irrigation channels in the area will keep us busy along the way, as will the history of this region. On the descent, we pass the ruins of the Azuaje baths, once a spa for kidney patients. It has been closed since 1983. The Azuaje ravine is home to the oldest laurel forests in Gran Canaria and is specially protected due to its biodiversity. In Firgas, we take in two more sights, the Paseo de Canarias and the Paseo de Gran Canaria, before ending this hiking tour at the starting point.
