The best time to travel to Tenerife

The special weather conditions on Tenerife are one of the special features of the largest of the Canary Islands. Although it should be hot and dry due to its proximity to the Sahara and the African continent, which is only 250 kilometres away, Tenerife's weather is characterised by a consistently warm climate. Temperatures range from a mild 17°C in winter to 30°C in summer, making the island an attractive holiday destination all year round!
Tenerife's special climate is caused by the north-easterly trade winds. These pick up water vapour over the Atlantic Ocean, rise into an impressive sea of clouds on the northern slopes of Pico del Teide and finally fall in fine drizzle. As the Teide acts as a weather divide, it creates two microclimates and an exciting contrast between north and south. While Tenerife's weather in the north is characterised by somewhat cooler, more humid temperatures, the south remains dry and warm and sunny. It is precisely this weather phenomenon that makes this holiday paradise so attractive. In Tenerife's special climate, you can lie on the white sandy beach and swim in the pleasantly warm sea at the same time as watching the snow-covered slopes of Pico del Teide.
In general, the weather on Tenerife is fairly predictable - the island has mild temperatures all year round, over 220 hours of sunshine a year and little rainfall. However, it is not only the seasons that determine the weather and climate on Tenerife, but also the cardinal points. Before you book your holiday in Tenerife, you should therefore find out about the seasons in Tenerife. This may make it easier for you to decide whether you want to travel to the north, east, south or west of the island.
When is the best time to go on holiday to Tenerife? What temperatures in which month? How many hours of sunshine are there and when?
Here are our specific answers.
The best time to go on holiday to Tenerife depends on the region you want to visit. Even though the largest Canary Island is known as the "island of eternal spring" for its mild temperatures of 23°C on average all year round, there are regional differences. The trade winds and the Pico del Teide, which acts as a weather divide, influence very contrasting weather conditions from north to south.
If you are looking for the highest temperatures and the most hours of sunshine, it is best to holiday in the south of Tenerife. As the trade winds form clouds and rain off the northern slopes of Pico del Teide, there is hardly any rainfall in the southern areas of the island.
The best time to visit is at the beginning of June or end of September - just before or after the summer. During this time, the air and water temperatures on the entire island are pleasantly warm without being too hot. On average, temperatures are around 25°C, while nine hours of sunshine can be expected. Summer in the south attracts visitors with long, warm days and mild nights!
The picture is different in towns such as Puerto de la Cruz in the north, in the east around San Miguel de Tajao and in the centre of the island. As far as Tenerife's weather is concerned, you can expect fewer hours of sunshine and rainfall in the winter months. Nevertheless, it is pleasantly warm at 17° to 20°C - nothing stands in the way of a swimming and beach holiday or extensive hiking tours, even in winter!
The best time to visit Tenerife for a holiday in the north and east is May, June and October, when temperatures are a mild 23°C and rain is no longer to be expected. It gets warmer in the summer months of July, August and September with temperatures rising up to 26°C and nine hours of sunshine.
